This month's Greenbuild International Conference and Expo in Washington, D.C., will feature eight finalists selected from 270 applicants selected to compete for the top three spots in the NOVA Innovation Competition. The competition seeks three startups with the most innovative solutions in housing, sustainable products and materials, renewable energy sources, and high-efficiency building solutions. Finalists will present their innovations to a panel of Saint-Gobain senior executives for cash prizes of up to $50,000. The eight finalists' projects span diverse segments of the building construction, high-performance materials, energy efficiency, and sustainable development market segments. Q-bot, an insulation-applying robot, uses robotic tools to insulate difficult to reach areas of the house with little disruption. 10x Technology produces micro- and nano-structured materials, while U.S. Bionics creates modular exoskeleton systems designed for operators working in construction industries. Bitfinder has created a smart home air quality monitor, and Ecovative Design processes agricultural and biological products into biocomposite foam materials for packaging and insulation. Melodea extracts Nano Crystalline Cellulose from industrial or agricultural waste for use in composite materials for a wide variety of industrial applications. In'Air Solutions says it has created a precise, reliable, and fast tool for measuring chemical indoor air pollutants. Finally, Alumina Energy says it created modular, reliable, and cost-efficient packed bed thermal energy storage technology, compatible with renewable or fossil fuel-based energy systems.
