OSHA Releases List of Frequently Cited Standard Violations in the Construction Industry in 2019

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has released the list of frequently cited standard violations in the construction industry for 2019. The most frequent citation according to OSHA was for fall protections violations.

The total number of citations in the construction industry for the year was 28,043 with the total cost of penalties reaching more than $89 million. In the residential construction industry, the total citations were approximately 2,000 with a total cost of about $5.5 million.

The top ten most frequently cited standard violations for construction during the period of October 2018 through September 2019 are listed below:

  1. Duty to have fall protection with 6,435 citations
  2. Scaffolds with 2,919 citations
  3. Ladder with 2,553 citations
  4. Training requirements for fall protection with 1,916 citations
  5. Eye and face protection with 1,541 citations
  6. General safety and health provisions with 942 citations
  7. Head protection with 903 citations
  8. Specific excavation requirements with 762 citations
  9. Ariel lifts with 730 citations
  10. Fall protection systems criteria and practices with 673 citations
