FBMA’s Main Event Boosts Record Attendance

When most of use are asked to write an article, we focus on making sure we have enough content to make the article worth reading. “You know”, keep their attention past the first couple of sentences. I don’t have to worry about enough content regarding this article as I have the easy task of sharing with you the results of our 2015 Main Event, FBMA’s Convention and Trade Show.

Through the hard work of a lot of people, I’m proud to report to you that our convention and trade show was a big success. Actually, the biggest ever. As we start to analyze the numbers, looking back 15 years, this convention and trade show was the most well attended, the most exhibitors and the most retail dealers registered since the year 2000.

Every event on our schedule for the convention and trade show ended up with more attendees that expected. We had 236 golfers play in our Tom Stead Memorial Golf Tournament. Everyone loved the golf ball cannon shots on both courses. We raised over $2,000 for our charity “Wounded Warriors”.

Our Kick-Off Breakfast with Buzz Sutherland was fantastic. Our attendees said it was the best breakfast in 10 years. Special recognition awards were presented to Spike Cissel, Manning Building Supplies and Steve Drayer, BlueLinx Corporation. Spike received the Charlie Harnden Industry Services Award that is FBMA’s highest award and Steve received the Leslie Thaxton Sales Excellence Award. Both East Coast Lumber and Haven Building Products, FBMA founder members, received their 95 year membership award.

As always, the Executive Industry Panel Discussion, moderated by Don Magruder, Ro-Mac Lumber and Supply, was interesting, thought-provoking and informative. Don puts a great deal of time into planning this event and he always has a great program.

The honorees for the Hall of Fame Luncheon were Al Barry, Kimal Lumber Company and Dick Gates, of Robbins Manufacturing (retired). We had a great crowd, our honorees’s speeches were heartfelt and the audience shared many stories about both of them.

The theme for Hospitality Row was “Polynesian Night”. The event was sponsored by BlueLinx Corporation; Huttig Building Products; Simpson-Strong Tie; U. S. Lumber; Dyke Industries; Robbins Wood Preserving and Weyerhaeuser/TrusJoist. What a great evening! Hula dancers, island games, attendees dancing on the stage and craft beer available. This evening turned out to be a memorable one.

Our trade show opened with the cutting of the ribbon. Within minutes, the isles were packed. I spoke to most of our exhibitors and they said there was an excitement in the air and were very pleased with the traffic on the floor—“We will be back next year”.

We will continue to build on our success and keep the momentum moving forward. However, the FBMA leadership now has their sights set on our 2020 convention and trade show as we celebrate FBMA’s 100 year anniversary!

Mark your calendar now for our 2016 Convention and Trade Show, October 5-7 at the Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention!

Greg Bell, Chairman of the Board 10/9/2015
